📖 Show Notes 📖

👉 Gig Performer vs Mainstage
Both Gig Performer and Mainstage are live performance software, designed to be used when you are performing live. This is slightly different from other types of software that are more built to be used for recording in a studio situation. Although they are both designed to fix the problem of how do you perform your studio-recorded sounds live on stage, the way they go about doing it is very different, the price points are very different, and the approach is very different.

👉 Gig Performer
Gig Performer costs $150 dollars and comes with no built-in sounds. For some, this is a deal-breaker; there is a lapse in reasoning here though. Gig Performer allows you to easily move from any software to performing live, while others are designed to use their own built-in sounds. Additionally, Gig Performer runs so light on processing that in my opinion, the stability that it has alone is worth the extra price. You would very easily spend 150 on a keyboard or on a new VST, so spending it on a super-powerful host makes sense to me.

It has predictive loading so that all parts of your song load when you launch it, making switching between sounds easy. It also has OSC support and Ableton link.

👉 Mainstage
Mainstage only costs 30 dollars, comes with built-in sounds, allows you to host 3rd party plugins, and has a similar widget style set up to Gig Performer. Unlike Gig Performer, however, it is nowhere near as lightweight, and it tends to really take up your computer resources.

👉 Who Built The Software And Why Did They Do It?
Mainstage was built by Apple for Logic users. It allows you to pretty seamlessly move from Logic to Mainstage. This is a nice touch and a great marketing idea from Apple.

Gig Performer was built by two touring musicians for pros who need a stable live keyboard set up. This means they are super in touch with what is needed when you are playing live, and they are always adding new features because they are coming across things they wish they were able to do.

👉 Ease Of Use
Both Mainstage and Gig Performer are very easy to use in preparation. Gig Performer works by connecting wires between your devices to control the signal flow. Mainstage is a traditional channel strip setup.

This difference comes during a performance. The experience of performing with Gig Performer is better on every level. It is a more stable program, it feels snappy to use, and it is set up not only to work any way you want to customize it but to easily talk to other apps using OSC. Additionally, Rig Manager allows you to quickly switch between different hardware devices without remapping.

👉 My Software Recommendation
I would highly recommend Gig Performer over Mainstage. You can get a free trial of this program for 14 days and give it a shot. If you need any VSTs to go with it some of my favorites are linked below.
