One of the basic techniques of layering is called "Mimicking". Mimicking is creating sounds that have the same function as other sounds. A snare, for example, has a snare function, but anything that's short, sharp, and higher in pitch than a kick will probably sound like a snare. This idea is simple, but so liberating! It means that as long as what you layer works, it doesn't matter what it sounds like.
