How to create a barn owl using watercolours and Pigma Micron pens:
Step 1: Start with Sketch
Use either Graphite or Transfer paper to begin. Use an eraser to clean any smudged or
excessively dark lines. This is a very important step as especially when working with a technical
medium such as Microns, the foundation of the illustration must be solid!
Step 2: Block in Light Grey Midtones
Using the grey Micron, begin to start building the lightest midtone values. For large areas or
places where a softer edge is needed– try using a brush with water immediately after placing
lines. If blocking in a larger area, fill with the Micron, then brush only the edges that need to be
softened.
Step 3: Place Darkest Values
Using the black Micron, block in the absolute darkest values in the illustration. For this step, be
very deliberate when placing–Try to avoid the wet brush technique for now. These areas of
darkest shadow should mostly be solid shapes. The more pure black that’s added into the piece
will add more contrast and set the mood.
Step 4: Plug in Black Midtones
This step will help the illustration become more seamless by connecting the light grey midtones
to the darkest black tones. Using the black Micron, start around the areas that were just blocked
in with the black, and add a few black lines, followed by a wet brush. Build up as much shadow
as needed to blend the midtones together.
Step 5: Refine Edges
Stylistically, this step can change the appearance of the illustration dramatically. Using either the
black or grey Micron, outline the edges of the main subject, and anything in the Foreground.
Use the black Micron for a bolder look, or alternatively the grey Micron will be softer, but refined.
It can be very effective to use a combination of both Microns for a beautiful line sensitivity
technique. *
Step 6: Add Detail lines
This final step is all about bringing the illustration together. Be sure to add extra detail around
focal point areas to direct the viewer’s eye. If any shading is disjointed, using the grey Micron
can help bridge the tones together. Don’t forget to sign your piece!
