The Emergency in India, a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977, was characterized by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declaring a state of emergency across the country. Officially issued under Article 352 of the Constitution by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed due to the prevailing 'internal disturbance,' the Emergency remained in effect from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977.
This order granted the prime minister the authority to rule by decree, allowing for the cancellation of elections and suspension of civil liberties. Throughout most of the Emergency, many of Gandhi's political opponents were imprisoned, and the press was subjected to censorship. Several other human rights violations were reported during this time, including a mass campaign for vasectomy spearheaded by her son, Sanjay Gandhi. The Emergency continues to be one of the most controversial periods in Indian history since its independence.
The decision to impose an emergency was initially proposed by Indira Gandhi, agreed upon by the President of India, and ratified by the Cabinet and the Parliament between July and August 1975. This decision was based on the rationale that there were imminent internal and external threats to the Indian state.
