In this tutorial, we back up our Windows hardware drivers, using a single command entered in PowerShell, a utility provided by default in all Windows installations. Whilst driver files are typically installed automatically by Windows, readily obtained from the manufacturer’s website or via a driver download utility, there will be occasions where we will struggle to obtain a specialist driver, and therefore backing up our existing driver may provide an option in the absence of an alternative.
Having run PowerShell as administrator, we enter the following command:
Export-WindowsDriver -Online -Destination “YOUR DESTINATION PATH”
*replacing the words YOUR DETINATION PATH with the path to your backup folder, obtained by holding Shift and right clicking on the destination folder, and selecting the option to “copy as path,” as shown at 01:37 in the video.
Be aware that the process of backing up can take between one and ten minutes and, during that time, there will be no indication of progress within the PowerShell window.
