Lava lamp convection demonstration - one way thunderstorms can form in our atmosphere is through convection. A lava lamp shows convection! As the lava is heated, it rises to the level where it is equal in temperature with the surrounding liquid. The lava cools off, then it descends once it reaches a temperature below the surrounding liquid. In our atmosphere, pockets of air rise as long as they remain warmer than the surrounding air. If enough moisture exists, this process can cause thunderstorms to form.
