Yusuf grew up in a very religious environment, in Jombang, a city in the province of East Java, Indonesia. In 1995, at the age of 19, he attended an Islamic university to study Islamic law. During this period, he was exposed to the teachings of Hizbur Tahir, an Islamic movement that advocates for the creation of an Islamic Caliphate.
In 1999 Yusuf met Amrozi, who was planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Bali. Yusuf was indoctrinated and recruited to join the team. In 2003, he was convicted of terrorism and served 6 years in prison.
