In this week’s video, we’re going to go over how to help someone land a job. That’s coming up.
Hi guys, I’m Kim with Snagajob, your number one source for hourly jobs and welcome to our weekly advice show.
When you have a friend or family member looking for a job, your first thought is to jump in and help anyway you can. We all can relate to the up’s and down’s of the job search process so it’s great that you want to be there for them. However, be cautious that there is a right way and a wrong way to offer a helping hand.
DO:
Be their cheerleader.
One of the most important and motivating things in a job search is a solid support system. If your friend or family member lands an interview or even a job, you should be the first person there to celebrate their accomplishments. But if things aren’t going so great, you should still be there to cheer them up and keep pushing them forward.
Keep an open ear.
Network on behalf of your job searching friend or relative. If you hear about or see a position that fits their experience or skill set, let them know! If you know someone looking to hire a new employee, make the connection! You might know about an opportunity that could be their future job.
Be the middle man.
Think of yourself as the double-checker. Before your loved one submits their resume, proofread it for them. Before they go to their big interview, practice a mock interview with common job interview questions so they’re prepared.
DON’T:
Be a helicopter helper.
Don’t hover over your loved one when you’re trying to assist them. There is nothing helpful about constantly peering over their shoulder to make sure they are doing things the “right” way. You could risk coming off bossy or overwhelming your loved one even more than they already are.
Make a joke of it.
You might think it’s okay to joke around to lighten the situation, but job searching can be a touchy subject. Tread lightly. You don’t want your loved one to think you’re making mockery of them for being unemployed.
Do everything for them.
Offering help does have a limit. Remember, if they are old enough to work, they’re probably old enough to handle things on their own. Applying to jobs for them or following up on their behalf is a major mistake and can actually hurt their chances of being hired.
