Always make sure all parts of your multimeter look to be in good working order. Check for cracks on the multimeter itself and for any fraying or nicks in the leads / probes. Now that you’ve ruled out any obvious damage, it’s important to check that your probes are working internally. Some people call this “ohming-out” the leads:
1. Set your multimeter to the ohm meter (Ω) on the selector knob.
2. Plug the black probe into the COM port. Insert the red probe into the jack marked for ohms. It may also be labeled VΩmA, VΩ or V (for voltage).
3. Gently tap the red and black tips together. Avoid touching the metal parts with your fingers while you do that. Your reading should be 0.5 ohms or less. If your reading is higher than that, replace the probes.
