About the conference:
The Pathogens Project Conference took place in Geneva on April 19th and 20th, 2023, with the purpose of “Creating the Framework for Tomorrow’s Pathogen Research.” The #PathogensProject aims to be a cross-disciplinary international forum to address the growing threat of biological risks to humanity. Goals include developing a set of recommendations on risk assessment and mitigation for high-risk pathogen research, creating new international channels and networks on trends and oversight of high-risk pathogen research, and generating public awareness of these issues.
In the coming years, humanity’s encounters with deadly viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens are likely to rise. Encroachment on the natural environment and climate-driven changes in ecosystems provide increasing opportunities for diseases to jump across species, including to humans. At the same time, there is a growing awareness that the field collection and experimental manipulation of potential pandemic viruses in high containment labs—while scientifically informative—carry the risk of accidentally seeding a pandemic.
The Pathogens Project was launched by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 2022, alongside a group of scientists and public health leaders.
