Midwinter traditions surrounding the Winter Solstice stem from pre-Christian celebrations and rituals, many of which seem to be in stark contrast to each other until their esoteric symbolism is properly deciphered and their ancient universal origins are fully understood. Winter Solstice is the start of Capricorn Season, when pagan Rome celebrated the Sun’s entrance into Capricorn as Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the nocturnal Sun, the pre-Christian time of rebirth and renewal.

Winter Solstice is Dec 21. The Sun rises in the same spot for 3 consecutive days before reversing course and days once again begin to get longer as nights get shorter, a new solar year is born on the 25th. The "mysteries" have to do with spiritual rebirth of the soul. In mystery school religions God is light, the only light, the universal light, hidden from mortals because it is pure, although omnipresent. Sun or fire worship are metaphors and should not be taken literally, they are symbols of Divine luminosity, the light within each of us.
