Hi Guys, today I’ll be sharing with you 15 Interesting Facts about Sloth
#1 Sloths live in tall trees in Central and South America because their long claws make walking on the ground challenging. There are two types of sloths: two-toed and three-toed.
#2 Today's sloths are typically the size of a medium-sized dog. However, ancient sloths, called 'Megatherium,' could reach sizes as large as an Asian elephant. These giant sloths became extinct about 10,000 years ago.
#3 Three-toed sloths are extremely picky and only eat the leaves from the trees where they were born.
#4 Sloths are three times stronger than humans. Right from birth, they can lift their entire body weight with just one arm. Their muscles are highly specialized, providing enough strength to resist the force of a jaguar attempting to pull them off a tree.
#5 Their fur is a living, breathing microcosm, hosting a variety of organisms like microbes, insects, fungi, and algae. The algae-covered fur is thought to serve as camouflage, helping sloths avoid predators.
#6 They poop a third of their body weight in one go. They will only relieve themselves once a week and can lose up to a third of their body weight in one sitting!
#7 The longest recorded lifespan for any sloth species in captivity is 50 years. However, it is thought that they can live even longer in their natural habitats.
#8 Sloths can spend 90% of their lives upside down due to their unique biology. Their organs are attached to their rib cage, preventing them from weighing down on their lungs. Unlike humans, sloths can hang upside down without impacting their breathing.
#9 Sloths are blind in bright daylight due to a rare condition called rod monochromacy, making them color-blind and visually impaired in dim light. Despite this, they compensate with a keen sense of smell and exceptional spatial memory.
#10 Without sloths there would be no avocados.
Giant ground sloths, now extinct, were among the few mammals with big enough digestive systems to eat and spread avocado seeds widely after feasting on the fruit.
#11 Sloths conserve energy by moving very slowly, making them the slowest mammals. They typically cover no more than 125 feet in a day, and when on the ground, they crawl at just 1 foot per minute.
#12 It takes sloths 30 days to digest a leaf! A sloth’s diet consists mainly of buds, leaves, and tender shoots. They have a multi-compartment stomach that allows them to effectively digest the tough cellulose that they eat.
#13 Sloths are quicker in water than on land, swimming three times faster than they move on the ground. With two additional neck vertebrae compared to other mammals, they can turn their heads 270°, easily keeping their noses above water while swimming.
#14 Sloths in the wild sleep as much as humans, getting around 8-9 hours of sleep each day.
#15 Sloths can fall 100 feet without getting hurt because their anatomy is adapted for falling. On average, a sloth will accidentally fall out of a tree once a week throughout its life.
