Why the NYC portal failed
New York City just tried to FaceTime Dublin, and it failed. The Portal, a 24-hour live stream, was shut down almost immediately after it opened - why did that happen? The hope was to strengthen human connection. Instead, we see people flashing each other, getting arrested, and other inappropriate behavior. If this isn't the plot of a Black Mirror episode, I don't know what is.
In this video, I cover why the idea failed, a design analysis of the portal, psychological concepts that explain people's behavior, and possible solutions. Can we have nice things?
