This follow-up film to 1984's "The Return of Godzilla," is the second film in the Heisei Era, and would start the trend of introducing a new monster (often evolving) with each installment. This particular movie introduces the fearsome flora known as Biollante!
In the film, Godzilla's cells are desired by many, each for their own unique purposes. The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) hope to develop a weapon to use against Godzilla (who is still buried in the volcanic Mount Mihara), and a scientist along with his daughter hope to use the cells to benefit mankind by using the cells to help plant-life grow in the desert country of Saradia. When terrorists attack the scientist's research institute, his daughter is killed. Stricken with grief, the scientist attempts to preserve her legacy by infusing her cells into that of a rose and unbeknownst to others, includes some of Godzilla's cells as well.
The result of his experiment is the towering monster Biollante, who appears as a gigantic rose. When Godzilla escapes from Mount Mihara, a brief battle with Biollante leaves the plant monster defeated and Godzilla free to terrorize the country once again. Soon after, the two monsters meet up once again in a bloody and vicious fight, with Biollante now having evolved into a far more ferocious and deadly form.
The film is a fan-favorite for a number of reasons, primarily because of the introduction of Biollante. The monster design is unique and unlike anything seen before in a Godzilla film and is often referred to as one of the Top 10 monsters of the Godzilla brand. Add to this the introduction of the human character, Miki Saegusa (who would continue to appear in the Heisei films) whose psychic powers often serve as a warning to Godzilla's arrival as well.
