Labrado Pipeline Surveillance Group, Destroys 27 Illegal Bunkering Camps.

In furtherance of its mandate to rid the Niger Delta of illegal oil bunkering and artisanal refining activities in the Niger Delta region, a pipeline surveillance and protection service, Labrador Pipeline Surveillance Group, has destroyed 27 illegal bunkering camps.

Disclosing this to newsmen during a chat in Port Harcourt, the Coordinator of Labrado Pipelines Surveillance, Sector Three, Biobele Abel, said that the Pipelines Surveillance group has within the period destroyed 27 camps operated by illegal bunkerers and artisanal refiners".

Biobelle Abel noted that some callous people are currently engaged in a practice known locally as "oil bunkering" - hacking into pipelines to steal crude then refining it or selling it abroad. Thieves hack into or blow up pipelines to steal the crude oil, then sell it on international markets or refine it locally. When they’re done, the pipeline spews oil for miles around.

Investigations show that the practice is both environmentally damaging and costly for the state. Estimates indicate that oil theft managed to lift around a fifth of NIgeria's two million barrel a day oil production last year, a significant sum in a country that depends on oil for 80 percent of its earnings.

The nation loses about 250 thousand barrels of oil per day and the ugly situation is already a threat to the nation’s economy and national security.

Continuing Biobele Abel said, “This level of oil theft is a very serious threat to our national security and our democracy. Also the painful damage to the environment due to crude oil vandalisation and oil theft cannot be overemphasized. The eco-system of the Niger Delta has been greatly violated and unfortunately this aspect of the cost of crude oil theft has not been given sufficient attention.”
