Determining which torques are clockwise and which are not is essential when dealing with torques. Here's one simple technique that works really well.
I do not advocate positive and negative torques since students drop negatives. I advocate modifying the net torque = zero equation to Clockwise Torques = Counterclockwise Torques. Then you can just gather the torques on either side of the equation.
