This exceptional Andante of Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 is the epitomy of combining a romantic tone with a touch of melancholy. The concerto was composed in 1957 for Shostakovich's son Maxim's 19th birthday. The recording here displays only the concerto second movement's masterful execution by Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, his compatriot classical pianist Denis Matsuev and the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Russia.
