Nama Sankirtana is a vibrant and spiritual musical tradition that plays a significant role in the devotional life of people. It is deeply connected to the worship of Lord Jagannath, Krishna and the Bhakti movement, particularly the teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who spent time in Puri spreading the practice of sankirtana.
Nama Sankirtana is not just music; it is a spiritual practice aimed at attaining divine bliss. The chanting of the holy names (Harinama) creates an atmosphere of devotion and surrender to God. It is believed that by engaging in sankirtana, one can purify the soul and attain moksha (liberation).
Many Odia saints and poets, including Achyutananda, Balaram Das, Jagannath Das, and Gouranga Charan Das, have contributed to this tradition through their compositions. Their bhajans and kirtans are still sung in temples and gatherings.
Nama Sankirtana is an integral part of Odia festivals such as Ratha Yatra, Dola Purnima, Kartik Purnima, Asta Prahari , chabis prahari and Janmashtami. During these events, devotees engage in Akhand Kirtan (non-stop chanting), creating an electrifying spiritual atmosphere.
The Hare Krishna Mahamantra:
हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे |
हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे ||

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

Meaning of the Mantra:
"Hare" – A call to Radha (Hladini Shakti), the divine energy of Lord Krishna.
"Krishna" – The Supreme Personality of Godhead, the all-attractive one.
"Rama" – Refers to Lord Rama or Krishna as Ramana (the reservoir of pleasure).

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who visited Puri, Odisha, emphasized the chanting of this Mahamantra as the easiest and most effective way to attain moksha (liberation) in Kali Yuga. He and his followers performed Nagar Sankirtana—chanting and dancing through the streets, spreading divine love and devotion.
