Back in 2020, I started my first software engineering job at Amazon. I was excited about working on something used by over 100 million people everyday. That means practically everyone is using this website. But what I didn’t expect was how much Amazon would slow me down as a software engineer.
At any tech company, recruiters often ask how much of your day you spend coding. Ideally, it should be over 50%. But during my time there, I wasn’t coding nearly as much as I expected.
Because that’s what software engineers do, they should be coding. But when I was at Amazon, I was hardly coding at all.
Before I tell my story, I want to mention that not every amazon experience is going to be like mine. Your success as a software engineer is going to depend on multiple variables like who your manager is, how friendly your teammates are, and if you’re working on a fast growing product.
For me it was a tough experience.
