Gaki are spectral beings in Japanese mythology, often called "hungry ghosts." They are believed to be the tormented spirits of individuals consumed by greed, selfishness, or other negative desires during their lifetimes. Condemned to a realm of suffering, gaki is depicted with emaciated bodies, large bellies, and tiny mouths, perpetually hungry and thirsty yet unable to consume. Their condition is seen as a direct consequence of their past actions, a stark warning against the pitfalls of excessive desire.
