The architecture and design collective Archisource have collaborated with the Bavarian manufacturer SANDHELDEN, to create sustainable trophies crafted from locally sourced quartz sand for their annual, international Drawing of the Year competition.
“The Archisource trophies have become key elements in celebrating the winners as part of the Drawing of the Year awards. Since its beginnings in 2019, we have sought innovative designers, architects and creative studios to create each year’s physical trophies'' said Archisource.
SANDHELDEN´s designer Carlos del Castillo worked with the Archisource design team to produce four trophies and thirty commendation awards all of which are completely unique in design. The trophies will be awarded to the four standout winners of the competition to recognise their exemplar drawings.
The 3D awards are an evolution of previous years’ sustainable award trophies, where in 2019 they were designed by Mamou-Mani Architects who created trophies from sugarcane bioplastic, and in 2020 The New Raw created awards from recycled plastics.
SANDHELDEN is changing the perception of sand by transforming the well-known material into durable objects.
“We were inspired by SANDHELDEN’s unique process and sustainable ethos,” said Archisource. “We wanted to showcase not only their unique manufacturing process but the creative opportunities of sand as a natural material within the design process”.
SANDHELDEN’s patented process of binder jetting is a type of 3D printing process split into several steps. The first deals with the 3D model. The second prints the selected shape in layers of quartz sand with high-precision nozzles in the highest quality. In the third step, the printing blank is carefully exposed with air pressure removing any loose grains of sand.
The continuous AS shaped trophies explore the idea of expressing sand at its fullest, drawing inspiration from the textures and nature of sand whilst using the raw material to create tactile 3D forms.
“We wanted to explore the binder jetting process, and we were very excited by its ability to resolve very detailed surface textures,” said Archisource. “The high levels of precision allowed us to achieve intricate and interesting patternations on the surface of the awards. The finish of the surface, coupled with the natural texture of the sand, makes holding the trophies quite a unique experience.”
The twisted trophies express the flowing dynamics, endless paths and eroded forms of sand. The design took inspiration from the textures and nature of sand through to the physical forms of the 3D Awards.
Sand can be brought into any shape imaginable, and the designers wanted to represent sand as a contextual material and express it through the physical forms it creates in the real world.
Sustainability plays a fundamental factor in the awards’ designs every year. Archisource has always consciously chosen to collaborate with designers and manufacturers that are excelling in their sustainable practices in original and innovative ways.
Binder jetting is a no-waste process, it does not require high temperatures like other 3D printing and together with local manufacturers, suppliers and post-production, all products by SANDHELDEN are 100% regionally made.
“The materiality, feel and tactile quality of the awards makes touching the trophies a truly unique experience,” said Archisource. “We have been inspired through our collaboration with SANDHELDEN and we’re very excited to be awarding this year’s winners with the truly special, physical, and sustainable awards.”
The four winners of the Drawing of the Year 2021 competition and recipients of the trophies will be announced by Archisource in March 2022.
