The next installment of this history of Rome, the creation of its empire and the impact this had on its Republic. This time we look at the career of Caius Marius, the new man who enjoyed an unprecedented five successive consulships between 104-100 BC. This was a time of political scandal and military humiliation and disaster. Marius rose as a man reliant on his own talent rather than the reputation of his ancestors.
Some see this as a time of great change for the Roman army and we will consider this idea and whether or not Marius' career marked a key moment in the development of the professional Roman army.
We will also look at the rise of the tribune, Saturninus and Marius' dealings with him, first as ally and then as enemy.

Ancient sources principally Plutarch's Life of Marius, Sallust, The Jugurthine War and Appian, Civil Wars Book 1. For modern studies of the army, L. Keppie, The Making of the Roman army (1984). The best discussion of the so called 'Marian Reforms' and the nature of the army in this era is F. Cadiou, L'Armee Imaginaire. Les soldats proletaires dans les legions romaines au dernier siecle de la Republique (2018) - with apologies because I couldn't get the accents to come out.
