👩⚕️It is very common that patients will ask for a scan of the spine. It is also very common that a scan is not necessary. A careful history and examination is of far greater value for most simple cases of back pain than a scan.
👩⚕️A scan is very sensitive for the detection of serious spinal disorders such as tumours and infection, such that it will almost always detect this type of disease if it is present.
👩⚕️Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scans (MRI scans) give a very clear picture of the structure of the spine. It does not tell the doctor why the spine is painful. In 85% of patients we are unable to say why back pain occurs. It is often more useful to concentrate on getting back to normal activities and doing right exercises to get better quicker.
