-Some universities also have a number of modules that you must take, before you are allowed to begin a PhD. In the UK it is not very common.

Thesis styles:
-By papers
-A standard academic thesis or dissertation

Research types:
1. Incremental projects
2. Blue sky, aka curiosity driven, projects or simply new projects

General Tips:
You need to do a good literature before you even start planing your project.

Spend time speaking with people
Don’t underestimate the power of communication

The first year the topic will not be well defined, will still be a bit blurry and that’s fine.

Organise yourself, because even silly notes that you will take, will matter later on…

You can use a software like http://miro.com to start planing on how to formulate an idea and the methodology to approach the project. You can share that with your supervisor and work on this.

Reports:
Then you need to start planning on the first progress report, usually at about 6-months.
You don’t have to write so much, but of good quality. Lots of students get that wrong.

Quality, methodology and good planning.

The first year report is on the way, and that is the so-called transfer report in the UK, as you transfer from the MPhil to PhD. That is a big step towards. So, work from day 1 towards that.

Planning tips:
1- Short regular, weekly, meetings with your supervisor and team, if not more often.
2- Make sure that you get prepared for every meeting, otherwise the supervisor may not be able to help you much.
3- Stop overthinking and start the research.
4- Work hard. It is not a 9-5 job. better to start from early on…before the topic become too tiring…
5- Think what you want to achieve from the PhD. Perhaps you can quantify it in a matter of papers.

My next vide will be on the methodology to approach specific challenges during your PhD.
