The veneration of the Mother of God as the protector of warriors dates back to the times of Kyivan Rus and Byzantium. Ukrainian Cossacks held the Feast of the Intercession (Pokrova) in special regard. This holiday became important for the Cossack community, as it was on Pokrova that new hetmans and officers were elected.
The historical connection between generations was also evident during the turbulent struggle for Ukraine’s freedom in the 20th century. The fighters for the Ukrainian people's state in 1917–1921 continued the Cossack traditions, and the Feast of Pokrova became a symbol of the founding of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
Today, a new generation of Ukrainian warriors demonstrates courage and resilience, proving that we are a nation of free people ready to defend our liberty. Since 2014, we have celebrated Defenders of Ukraine Day on Pokrova.
In the face of Russian aggression, millions of people are Ukrainian defenders—soldiers, volunteers, veterans, medics, and activists. All of them, putting their peaceful lives on hold, take on the responsibility for Ukraine’s future. Through their actions, like a divine Intercession, they protect our peaceful life.
We remember all those who fought for Ukraine’s freedom, honor the fallen, and thank Ukraine’s defenders.
