Some buildings in China are being referred to as "ugly buildings". People may say that beauty is subjective, and there is no absolute standard,. So we welcome you to leave your comments on what you think of these buildings.
Let’s take a look at this landmark building that really looks like a Chinese Mitten Crab, the Ba Cheng Xie Culture Hall in Kunshan county.
Believe me, this is an actual building, although it looks so much like a pile of hay that Chinese netizens usually call it “chicken’s nest".
This is the Guangxi New Media Center in Nanning city, Guangxi province, one of the key construction projects for the 60th anniversary of the founding of Guangxi, with a total investment of 309 Million USD. The building started construction in 2016 and was completed in less than two years, the speed is truly admirable.
Since 2010, China Architecture Talk has been organizing the China Top 10 Ugly Architecture Awards and is currently on its 12th annual round of selections. The organizers of the event claim that the original purpose of selecting ugly buildings is "to provoke people to think about the beauty and ugliness of architecture and to enhance the social responsibility of people in the construction industry".
It is well known that free speech is censored in China, but reviews of buildings are not strictly controlled. However, the judges know that some of the powerful institutions are not to be messed with.
In the announced results of the Top 10 Ugliest Buildings in 2010, there was no mention of the CCTV building. This building is called "Big Boxers" by the public because its shape resembles the boxer shorts that people wear.
Of course, in mainland China, there are lots of uglier buildings like these, all over the place. Many netizens jokingly say that there is no ugliest building in China, as they only get uglier.
Some people say that there is no absolute standard for beauty and ugliness.
One of the important reasons why people "can't stand" these ugly buildings is that most of these buildings are public buildings. They’re inconspicuous locations, and people have to face them every day. Most of these buildings are heavily invested in, and the taxpayers' money is spent on their construction.
The increasing number of "ugly buildings" in China is a manifestation of the excessive centralization of government power, the lack of transparency in decision-making, and the low aesthetic taste of these officials.
Of course, each ugly building has its own story, but they are an overall reflection of the low moral value of society. When people only pursue money and satisfying their desires without any moral restraint, how long do they have before extinction? In 79 A.D., the town of Pompeii was buried overnight, in which more than 20,000 people died. Is that not a warning to mankind?
