808 Day Jam 2024 from Tonelab

4 years ago the 808 fell out onto the world stage.. it didn’t really intend to be anything other than something to accompany musicians while they write, or practise, at home.
But, fast-forward to 2024.. and it’s been said that ‘if’ Roland received royalties for every song that featured an 808 ‘Sample’, that Roland would be richer than Exxon.
Funnily enough, the 16 sounds, featured on an original 808, some 44 years later.. are still being used, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing either.
The funny thing is.. those ‘sounds’, that many ‘snarled’ at back in the day.. due to ‘their’ lack of authenticity.. sounding like a ‘real drum kit’.. have, somewhat ‘dominated’, in terms of usage and/or exposure.
Amazing to think.. that these 808 sounds, as ‘humble’ as they originally started.. would still be the defining force, some 4 decades later.
Regardless of the history behind the 808.. if the 808 has it’s own ‘day’, then, I think it’s also just as important that the SP1200 has IT’s own day. I’ve previously proposed September 12th.. as it contains an S, and a P... which would also include the SP12.
And, I’m quite sure, #808day was a ‘grass-roots’, or fan-based initiative.. and therefore.. so ‘deservingly’ should have IT’s ‘day’.
Because of that, I thought it would be pertinent to feature a little medley, from, both the 808 and the SP1200 ‘together’.
I hope you enjoy this little ‘jam’, on the 808 with the SP1200 ‘slaved’ to it.. love the 808 clock, as ‘loose’ as it is.. it’s a great ‘feel’. 🫡
Ps. The 808’s ‘Start/Stop’ button is a little ‘troubled’, so it took a couple of presses 😆, as you’ll see.
For those interested, behind the scenes is a SH101 (doing the reverse ‘clap’.. a Korg KMS-30 ‘Sync Box’ (allowing the 808 to be the ‘Master’ driving the SP1200 and, finally, an SRE-555 providing the ‘Tape-Echo’ vibes and a Bricasti M7 providing some ‘verb’ the Roland SRE-555 Tape Echo, RME FireFace800’s ‘OverDrive’ + a few SSL EQ/Compressor modules.
