At the time of this recording about five years ago back in 2016 (what a time to be alive) and independently of each other Jared Polin (FroKnows Photo) and Matt Granger (formally that Nikon Guy) did photo challenges using the same model of camera.
For Matt it was his series Budgetthography and for Jered it was a 5 min Portrait challenge.
Both series are equally worthy of a watch, yes even five years later.
That camera had been the top of the line of Nikons Pro DSLR range…in 2001 so this yare it is celebrating its 20th anniversary
When it was introduces in 2001 it had a recommended retail price (according to Matt Granger) of $5,999, £3,900 4,560Euro or 50,340:-
I got it now in 2021 on Tradera for 600:- witch is $60, £46 or 54Euro. Talk about depreciating value.
When the D1x was introduces it sported a 5,33Mp 23,7x15,6mm CCD sensor with a maximum framerate of 3fps.
5 Aria Dynamic (Multi-CAM1300) AF-system
ISO 120-800 without boost.
About 8 stops of exposure latitude (Matt Granger).
Shutter times from 30sec to 1/16000 (most 1/8000) and Bulb mode.
Flash sync up to 1/500 sec (Ken Rockwell), which puts it on par with the Hasselblad 500 systems Carl Zeiss leafcutter lenses.
3D colour Matrix Metering
According to Matt Granger an advantage of getting the D1x over the D1H or D1 is that the 4028x1324 sensor resolution makes it an 3008x1960 image resolution. Which makes it possible to show the images in video in full-HD or 1080p.
Quat from Ken Rockwells website:
“AF speed is brutally fast. Make sure you are not using crappy discount lenses like Sigma, because its AF motor is so powerful it may rip your dime-store lens to shreds just as the F5 will.”
This is interesting since the review was written in 2002-2003 and how SIGMA back then was viewed as a “discount lens brand”. Keep in mined this was a time before the ART and Contemporary line of lenses.
And speaking of witch: “just as the F5 will” I own a F5 as well as the D1x and putting them side by side you can see the heritage. When the D1 was introduced in 1999-2000 the engineers at Nikon basically gutted a F5 and transplanted in the digital gear and the D1 was born.
The D1x is not compatible with the Creative Lighting System (CLS). But if you are in the need of TTL Flash there is the Nikon SB-80DX Speedlight.
GN 38
ISO 25-1000
24-105mm (17 and 14 with adaptor)
4AA batteries.
Also it was a bit of an accident that this episode was published at the same date as the Swedish primer date of The Matrix Resurrections… But during “production” the parallels and so on just happened out of “boredom”. Anyway… yeah, there it is.
