Design
Hero5 Black model is little modified comparing to Hero4 cam as now its rectangular shape is coated with grippy material and corners are rounded up to enhance beauty of product.
On the rear of Gopro Hero 4, there’s a hero port for Battery BacPac. But the port is removed in the latest version. Obviously, the reason is for waterproof design.
Connection ports：
To keep the internals of the camera free of water, GoPro has reinforced the battery, microSD and connection port covers to keep them sealed. It really takes some effort to access the micro-HDMI and charging port, especially for those who have large fingers. And here’s another upgrades, the USB port has been changed to type-C in GoPro Hero 5.
3 microphones system:
In this upgrade, we also have 3 microphones now, one on the top near the shutter, one to the side and one near your charging port.
Housing:
Notice that comparing to GoPro 4, GoPro 5 has a hardened rubber in between the clips, which mount the camera more firmly.
Touch screen：
One great update is the 2 inch LCD type touch screen with beautiful UI that makes it much easier to operate.
The only complaint I have is that it sometimes feel a little slow to react, and the touch detection isn’t as sensitive as smart phones.
Voice control:
There Hero5 Black has built-in voice control. This is a great feature when you are in an awesome moment or when you take group picture with no free hands to control go pro. It supports a variety of phrases that begin with GoPro.
Image and video quality
GoPro Hero5 black takes up to 12 megapixels, and video resolution up to 4k. And there is a bust mode and timelapse mode and night timelapse mode. Just like Hero4, not every feature is available with every mode. For example, shooting a 4k, your options are only 30 and 24 frames per second and image stabilization is not supported. While shooting 720p, you can go all the way up to 240 frames per second.
Image stabilization:
What makes GoPro hero5 stand out is that you now have image stabilization. It can crop out 10% of the frame and smooth out some of those jarring clips, like what you might have when your camera is mounted on a bike or skateboard. But I have to say, only the gimbal can really remove the shake.
But note that stabilization is only available at 2.7k resolutions and below. It’s not there if you want to shoot a 4k.
App:
There’re 3 apps you might need to consider to use along with your Gopro.
The 1st one is Capture. You can remotely control your gopro like press record, manage media, change settings,etc. The app is intuitive and simple to use. They make it easier to pair the camera to a smartphone over Wi-Fi and review footage. But the pairing process is still a bit of a faff.
The 2nd one Quick is the editing application available on iOS and Android devices and it helps users to add creative effects and transitions to video clips as well as one can sync the audio files easily to generate impressive beats for recorded videos. The desktop version of Quick also contains all these features and can serve users with extended control functions, like enabling users to overlay the GPS data for extreme analysis of speed, G-force and other data fields.
If you look for a more advanced editing app, Splice gives the user greater control over edits, as well as enabling access to the iTunes library for overlaying proper music, but it's currently only available on iOS.
