In today's special episode, we'll be celebrating the achievements of girls and women all over the world for International Women's Day! So what's it all about? It's all about celebrating girl power! This year's theme is Cracking the Code, which is all about highlighting the work of women in STEM. But the day's also a chance for us to acknowledge how far we've come and recognise how much progress we still need to make.
Throughout history, women have fought hard for equality. From things like getting an education, to being able to work or even vote. And in some countries, women are still fighting for basic human rights. Here in Australia, financial equality is a big issue! New research shows that, on average, women earn about one mill less over their lifetime than men. And men still have higher average salaries than women in 95% of all occupations. So society still has a long way to go to honour the women who came before us and champion the women of today and tomorrow.
WOMEN STATUES
The City of Melbourne is set to get some more statues of women! At the moment, less than 2% of the city's statues are women, and around the country there are more statues of animals than women! So, it's calling for nominations of remarkable women to be immortalised in statue form forever. A couple of new ones were also unveiled around the country today, including this featuring the first Australian women to enter federal parliament in Canberra and this one of Aussie netball icon Sharelle McMahon in Melbourne.
THE WIGGLES
As a special treat for International Women's Day, Michelle spoke to the four female Wiggles! They shared what it's like being women in the entertainment industry and what today means to them.
TREK KID
Now let's meet one very impressive young woman, Eva. She has cerebral palsy and recently made it her goal to conquer Mount Kosciuszko in her wheelchair.
