Are side quests simply “optional” content to extend for how long you can play a game? Or is there more to them than meets the eye? Considering the evolution of games and history of RPGs, it turns out there is — quite a lot, too!

Indeed, the early games of the 80’s and 90’s, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Pool of Radiance, and The Legend of Zelda, might have used side quests as secondary tasks, but they have grown to play many other roles and to add narrative details, like in The Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2. Certain RPGs, among which are Zelda Breath of The Wild and Elden Ring, use them to let players craft their own journey, however they wish. And a select group of video games, of which BOTW, the soulsborne series, and the Dishonored franchise are part, manage to give these missions a whole new, unexpected purpose but outright ingenious! Today, we take a deep dive into the quest design of these games to understand why side quests matter.
