Australia's National Anti-Corruption Commission - A New Standard for Public Integrity?
New laws for an Australian national anti-corruption commission were passed on November 30th, 2022. What does the final outcome hold, and how does this new anti-corruption body compare on the world stage? Among OECD countries, this reform will embed Australia’s ‘standing royal commission’ of anti-corruption investigation, nationally, for the first time.
Over 15 years since Australia’s first national integrity system assessment recommended such an agency (Griffith University and Transparency International Australia, 2005), the Commission’s pro-integrity jurisdiction also stretches beyond the criminal focus of most national anti-corruption bodies, and includes innovative, stand-alone corruption prevention powers.
