The famous battle at Height 3234 became one of the most dramatic episodes of the Afghan war. The battle took place on Christmas Day 1988: at that time, a special detachment of mujahideen opposed the 9th Company of the 345th Guards Parachute and Airborne Regiment of the Airborne Forces. 39 Soviet soldiers defended an important frontier from hundreds of militants: according to various estimates, the height was attacked by 200 to 400 people.
Now the story is expectedly covered with myths and speculations. So what was going on then in the Afghan mountains? We talked to a participant of those events - about the days before the clash, the hours of incessant slaughter and the story that Fyodor Bondarchuk's acclaimed film adaptation told us years later.
