As part of UNRISD's Gender Justice and Development Programme* ongoing inquiry into the growing backlash against progress in gender equality and rights, this webinar examines the strategies of anti-gender movements that use development discourse to advocate for policies restricting the rights of women, LGBTIQ+ individuals and limiting the scope of discussions on sexual and reproductive health and rights. It explores the transnational support for these movements, highlighting the role of resource and idea exchange between the global North and South.
Speakers at the webinar were Haley McEwen (Gothenburg University) and Lata Narayanaswamy (University of Leeds). The webinar was moderated by Fabio Velez (UNRISD).
Work in the Gender Justice and Development Programme aims to contribute to understanding and addressing the economic, social, cultural and political barriers to the kinds of transformations—in individuals and institutions—necessary not only for equality and empowerment, but for justice and for leaving no one behind through fair treatment for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC).
The Gender Justice and Development Programme focuses on understanding, analysing and engaging with processes of policy change around the themes of gender, technologies and digital economies; feminist perspectives on climate change; and antigenderism and global governance.
