Hilo to Kona via Hawaii's Saddle Road | 8x Hyperlapse | 4K 60fps Remaster
An 8x hyperlapse in 4K 60fps of the drive from Hilo on the southeast side of Hawaii's big island to Kona on the northwest side of the island via the "Saddle Road" route, also known as Hawaii Route 200.
This one-off bonus video is a little blast from the past, or at least from before the @fourwheeltravel channel came into existence in 2018! In 2016, we visited the 'big island' of Hawaii, and I stuck a GoPro Hero3 camera onto the front of our rental SUV.
The video is a remastered version of the original GoPro footage, enhanced to 4K 60fps with AI upscaling, color correction, and stabilization involving some painstaking processing and editing.
Saddle Road is a 54-mile (87 km) route that offers diverse scenery, including dried lava flows, rolling pastureland, desert, and moon-like fields, lush rainforests, and trailheads leading to various hiking trails, with access to mountaintops of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, the largest military training reserve in Hawaii, and Bradshaw Army Airfield.
While previously forbidden by many car rental companies, it is now mostly allowed. It was once considered the state's most dangerous road due to rough areas and poorly maintained pavement. Although some hazardous sections remain, it's no worse than other island roads. Drive cautiously, as the area lacks facilities, and help could be far away if your car breaks down or runs out of gas.
Saddle Road is named after the stretch that passes between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes. The area is marked with small crosses to commemorate those who died while driving, serving as a reminder to be cautious. The area is prone to heavy mist, but we did not encounter any mist on this trip.
At 6,632 feet (2,021 m), the highest point on the road resembles a moon-like landscape, with sparse vegetation and extensive bare lava stretches.
