If you want to display a post image for every post on your blog, you can add a Featured Image to each post. This option is available in the post editor. Look for the "Featured Image" section in the right sidebar of the editor.
Where the image displays on the post and whether or not the thumbnail is cropped is up to the theme. This goes for the size of the post thumbnail as well. Virtually every theme shows Featured Images, so you should be able to see them on your site right away after adding them.
