It is beyond doubt: designing a worthy villain is necessary for the success of a story in a game. Not only is it the foundation of any narrative and does it shape the protagonist, but it also motivates the player! So, how should you go about creating an unforgettable antagonist? Let’s find out.

As with any aspect of game design, making stories that work and plausible characters is a daunting task, because there’s no strict rule to guide you. You must be creative! But there is a whole heap of techniques that have been proved by resisting the test of time, strategies that we can employ to build from the bottom up a solid opponent who will stick with your players (and not because they were terribly written).
