Migration dynamics are strongly determined by a balancing act between the need or desire to migrate and improve one’s livelihood possibilities and the financial capacity to carry through with it. In addition, migration may offer a pathway out of poverty or inequality, by providing a lifeline back to families through remittances, but also through the knowledge, skills and social contacts one brings back upon returning. As poverty and inequality are multifaceted, and as migration may provide a pathway out of such circumstances, understanding the interlinkage between poverty, inequality and migration is of central importance to policy. This session will explore the various ways poverty, inequality and migration interact, bringing to the fore theoretical foundations, empirical observations from the Global South and possible policy options. The Migration for Development and Equality (MIDEQ) Hub works with a global network of partners in 12 countries in the Global South, organized into six migration corridors, to transform understandings of the relationships between migration, development and inequality. The project seeks to promote a better understanding of how structural inequalities—related to poverty, age, gender and race—drive migration and limit its potential to contribute to personal, societal and global development, and propose ways to overcome inequalities and improve migration outcomes.
