PRESIDENT BIDEN SPEAKS ABOUT REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN AMERICA
President Joe Biden spoke at the White House today about the end of Roe v. Wade, and announced executive actions to protect American’s access to abortion. He called the Supreme Court’s decision “terrible, extreme, and I think so totally wrongheaded.” He said that the decision “was not driven by the constitution,” and “not a decision driven by history.” Instead, he argued that “it was an exercise in raw political power.”
After urging abortion supporters to vote in November, Biden said, “consider the challenge excepted, Court.” He talked about what the executive order he signed will accomplish in the meantime. The order instructs the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services “to do everything in their power to protect these women seeking to invoke their rights.” It also directs that clinics in states where abortion is still legal be protected from intimidation, and women who travel from states where abortion is illegal to states where it is legal, be protected, and that women continue to have access to medication abortion that been available for over 20 years.
On top of this, the executive order “directs the Department of Health and Human Services, HHS, to ensure all patients, including pregnant women and girls, experiencing pregnancy loss, get emergency care they need under federal law, and that doctors have the clear guidance on their own responsibilities and protections.” Under the executive order, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) is also asked to “crack down on data brokers that sell private information to extreme groups” in order to protect patient privacy.
