The Great Leap Forward (1958–1962) was a campaign initiated by Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong to rapidly transform China from an agrarian society into an industrialized socialist nation. It aimed to boost agricultural and industrial production through mass mobilization, collectivization of farms, and ambitious steel production goals. However, poor planning, over-reporting of production figures, and unrealistic targets led to widespread famine, with an estimated 15-45 million deaths. The movement’s failure weakened Mao's leadership, disrupted China's economy, and caused immense human suffering, but also paved the way for future reforms under Deng Xiaoping in the late 20th century.
