Toyota Camry Solara Identity Crisis Commercial
This is the one shot for the commercial that I was responsible for; a 6 second sequence of a man and his dog driving across the desert. Since this was to be a Canadian ad campaign, the usual images of the Utah Salt Flats were out of the question. But Canada does have a desert-like place, around Drumheller Alberta. I know, because I got to go there in the summer of 2000, a few months after finishing this spot. Now, one solution for the spot would have been to just take the car out there and film it, but the director's vision called for something more dream-like, more idealized. Thus, I was tasked with creating an all-CG environment. I cheated most of it with displacement mapping and texture-mapped grids off in the distance, but because the car was actually moving quickly, the resulting perspective shift required closer objects to be modelled in three dimensions. And so I laboured over rock formations for a couple of weeks - which was a real joy, let me tell you. The smaller rocks strewn over the ground were done by running particle explosion simulations, which scattered debris in a natural, chaotic fashion. And then there were the little details, such as the reflections seen in the rear-view and side mirrors, the dust trail, and the spinning wheels. When the car was filmed on set, they had a rig to turn the tires, but even at full speed, it was nowhere near what it needed to be to simulate a fast-moving car. So we rendered just hubcaps separately, tracking them to the car.
I had a surprise lying in wait for me at the end of the spot - the day before we were to deliver it, in fact. When a tape of my animation was shown to head office in Japan, word came down that there had to be a road. This driving across bare sand action had to go. So I very quickly created an asphalt surface (with distressed surface and mottled markings) that was rendered separately and comped on top.
