Afterglove, a melodic rock band hailing from Michigan, was on the verge of superstardom in the mid-80s. With influences from legendary bands and artists like Night Ranger, Jeff Paris, Rick Springfield, Strangeways, Heart, and Honeymoon Suite, their sound was quintessential AOR. Their debut album, Hearts On Fire, released in 1987 on Monarch Records, was packed with powerful, radio-ready hits that embodied the heart of mid-80s rock. The charismatic frontman Johnny Steele had a commanding stage presence, and with his soaring vocals, many predicted he would go on to have a brilliant career.
The rest of the lineup included Mark "Blaze" Taylor on guitar, whose riffs and solos were as fiery as the album title; Dylan White on bass, holding down the groove; Randy North on keyboards, adding lush synth layers that defined their sound; and Chris "Thunder" Watts on drums, delivering a thunderous backbeat. Produced by the legendary Rick Blaze, Hearts On Fire quickly became one of Monarch Records' best-selling albums, helping to solidify the label's reputation in the rock world.
The breakout hit, Oh, the Eighties, climbed to #21 on the Billboard Rock Chart and even reached #120 on the Billboard Hot 200. The song’s nostalgic lyrics about growing up in the 80s, dreaming of rock stardom, and listening to American rock radio resonated deeply with fans, making it a radio staple across the country.
The band’s success earned them opening slots on tours with some of the biggest names in rock, including Night Ranger, Heart, and Loverboy. Hearts On Fire was hailed by critics, with one reviewer calling it "a masterclass in melodic rock," and another saying "this album is pure AOR perfection."
However, despite the momentum, their sophomore release didn’t match the explosive success of their debut. While their follow-up album received moderate praise, it lacked the same spark, and the band began to lose steam. After one last tour, the members went their separate ways. Johnny Steele went on to form a new band, Vivid Horizon, while other members pursued different careers—Mark Taylor became a session musician, Dylan White became a music teacher, Randy North opened a recording studio, and Chris Watts worked as a carpenter while occasionally playing drums for touring acts.
Hearts On Fire remains a cult classic among AOR fans, standing as one of the best examples of 80s melodic rock.
