Michael McDonald Patrick Simmons Tom Johnston "Black Water" 2003 Live@Chicago
It was a Doobie Brothers reunion of sorts back in 2003 when Michael McDonald invited the remaining two original members as guests for this concert. Black Water is an original Doobie Brothers song, so it is very appropriate for these two original members to be on hand. After Patrick and Tom are introduced by Michael, Patrick makes light banter .... these artists are all professionals, with nothing to prove. Back then the fact is that the Doobie Brothers were fading, both creatively and physically when Tom Johnston was forced to leave the group for health reasons in the late 70's. From my point of view, Michael McDonald added creativity and direction to the Doobie Brothers' train wreck, effectively adding a new R&B twist to the southern sound they were already known for.
