Brian Cox explains the phenomenon of a type 1a supernova explosion. He describes how a star, like our sun, exhausts its nuclear fuel, burning hydrogen into helium and then helium into carbon and oxygen. Eventually, the star reaches the end of its life cycle and becomes a white dwarf star, with its outer layers blown off into space. If the star has a companion, it can begin to accrete matter until it collapses under its own weight, resulting in a massive explosion known as a type 1a supernova.
