Classic Concentration (NES) Playthrough

Classic Concentration was an NBC-produced game show that aired on American television between 1987 to 1991, and it was hosted by none other than the inimitable legend Alex Trebek.
The show is based around the old memory game Concentration. Remember that one from when you were a kid? The game is simple: you lay a deck of cards out face down on a table and you and a friend take turns flipping over pairs of cards in hopes of finding a match. Once you find a pair, you take those cards, and when the table is clear, the person with the bigger stack of cards is the winner.
The TV show is essentially the same thing, albeit slightly less mundane in its execution. The board is made up of twenty-five panels marked with "fabulous prizes" that can be won if the contestant matches a like pair. A rebus puzzle is revealed as the panels are cleared, and whoever first correctly guesses the phrase wins the round. After a few rounds of play, the overall winner plays a speed round for a chance to win a brand new car.
Softie, the company behind the original 1988 Dos game (as well as several other game show adaptations for PCs, including the classic CGA version of Wheel of Fortune), was also responsible for this NES port.
The style is a big departure from what we saw in Rare's GameTek games, but it all works out pretty well. The graphics are entertaining - I'm a big fan of the super awkward body language and the covert side-eyeing going on between the contestants - and the rebus illustrations are clear and easy to decipher. The balding piano player on the title screen was an amusing touch, and it's neat that the music syncs itself up to the screen transitions. The bonus round music is unexpectedly dramatic and tense, too.
The game does a nice job of bringing the feeling of the show to the NES, and overall, I liked it. If you enjoy 8-bit game show games, it's worth checking out.
