We are going on a tour of the St. Petersburg metro.
Did you know that the metro in St. Petersburg could have been built back in the 19th century? The very first projects date back to the era of Alexander 1, when it was planned to lay a tunnel under the Neva River with the help of a tunneling shield. But metro projects began to appear especially actively from the end of the 19th century: this is a grandiose project of engineer Balinsky, who proposed to build an overpass-embankment line with a length of more than 100 km, and the project of engineer Hanneman, who proposed to build a three-story metal tunnel under the Neva instead of the Trinity Bridge: the upper road for pedestrians, and it had to move like a travolator, the middle one - for horse-drawn carriages, there is also a cable car driven by an electric motor, and even a subway project under Nevsky Prospekt with glass spherical stations, but none of them found support.
Meanwhile, the population of the city steadily grew, the problem of transport became very acute, but at the very moment when the construction of the subway in St. Petersburg was already a done deal, a revolution occurred, and the capital was moved to Moscow. And only after the Moscow metro appeared Leningrad metro. And since it was built in a very difficult time, it still keeps a lot of mysteries…
