Gin and tonic
Did you know that gin and tonic was born as medicinal drink?
The British in the tropical regions of their Empire faced the constant threat of malaria.
To combat this deadly disease, they turned to quinine, a substance derived from a tree, which was used by the Indigenous peoples of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador.
To make the bitter quinine more palatable, the British mixed it with soda and sugar, creating medicinal tonic water.
This in turn led to the birth of the iconic gin and tonic combination.
In India, the British mixed their medicinal quinine tonic with gin, which was widely available, since even soldiers were already given a gin ration.
As time passed, the need for quinine as a malaria preventive decreased, tonic water evolved into a refreshing beverage, and gin and tonic into the long drink favourite we know today.
