Dominant global and national political, policy and media narratives about migration and migrants are often negative, lacking in nuance, unevidenced and exclusive of migrant voices. These narratives reflect and reinforce racism, xenophobia and intersecting forms of discrimination and have harmful consequences for migrants who may already find themselves in precarious situations. They are manifested in violations of migrants’ human rights, including in the lack of access to basic services such as health, education and justice, or discrimination in employment resulting in occupational segregation of migrant workers and lower remuneration received for work of equal value. These violations undermine both human potential and the potential for migration to contribute to development and and improved outcomes for migrants. The Migration for Development and Equality (MIDEQ) Hub works with a global network of partners in 12 countries in the Global South, organized into six migration corridors, to transform understandings of the relationships between migration, development and inequality. The project seeks to promote a better understanding of how structural inequalities—related to poverty, age, gender and race—drive migration and limit its potential to contribute to personal, societal and global development, and propose ways to overcome inequalities and improve migration outcomes.
