In 2020, it seems that the world collapsed all possible misfortunes. However, history remembers the year when things on the planet was much worse.
1348
Plague
A terrible disease has spread along the silk road and in just 18 months has destroyed at least a third of the total population of Europe. Hell on Earth was represented by the image of the plague doctor in a mask with a bird's beak: because the doctors were protected from the unbearable stench of rotting corpses. However, the disease stimulated a true Golden age in history. Different social strata have equal income, the economy soared, and the art flourished.

The Journey Of Christopher Columbus
The colonization of North America by Europeans does not seem, at first sight, so gloomy event. However, brought to the mainland of the disease caused the demographic collapse of the indigenous population. By the nineteenth century, it killed about 90% of the Indians. Even worse, in search of new labor, the colonizers turned to Africa — and this was the beginning of the formation of the slave trade throughout the world.

Mankind suddenly realized that it may destroy itself because of some territorial disputes, and finally a little scared.
