A Scary Walk through an Abandoned Children's Hospital - Kinderkrankenhaus Weißensee

This is probably the most scary, dangerous, and beautiful abandoned building that I have explored!
I took a slow walk through this abandoned labyrinth in Berlin, with rooms full of graffiti, ceilings and floors that were no longer there, voices in the distance, and ghosts that opened windows for their own amusement!
It was 10 years ago when I first came to explore this Abandoned Children's Hospital here in Berlin,
and since that time, and despite numerous arson attempts, the former Children's Hospital is still standing, but only just!

History of the Children's Hospital:
The former children's hospital is located at Hansastraße 178–180. The design and construction planning for the first municipal-run infant and children's hospital in Prussia was taken over by the municipal building officer Carl James Bühring. It was inaugurated on 8 July 1911 with a ceremony. For therapeutic purposes, the clinic was integrated into a designed park and had a lecture hall for aspiring physicians connected to the main building. A novelty for that time was the milk spa located in the immediate vicinity of the hospital. It included a model cowshed and a food preparation facility to ensure a direct supply of milk to newborns and their mothers. The surplus milk was sold to the population.

When the children's hospital was completed, there was no traffic routing in this area and the facility initially bore the address Straße 33, No. 4, from 1912 according to Giersstraße 4. In the 1914 address book, a route from the Israelite cemetery to Falkenberger Straße is already included on the overview map Berlin-Weißensee: At the northeast area of its intersection with Hohenschönhauser Straße are the Milchkuranstalt, the infant hospital and then the Volkspark opposite the mouth Giersstraße.

The children's hospital on the 28,000 m² property stood the test of time. In 1987 it was extended by the addition of a ward building. Another ten years later, by decision of the Senate in 1996, the traditional institution was closed. It remained only as a listed property. Since 1 January 1997, the former infant hospital of the municipality of Weißensee with all farm buildings has been unused and left to decay.

The building was sold to a Russian investor in 2005 after several attempts (a company wanted to cure AIDS with radio waves). By 2015 at the latest, a scientific centre for cancer research was to go into operation on the site, with plans for a therapy centre, an outpatient clinic and a conference centre. In the concept of the company MWZ Bio Resonanz GmbH (a consortium of Russian doctors), ten million euros were earmarked for the protection and preservation of the building fabric. By mid-June 2013, the main building had already burned eleven times, so that the fire brigade assumes arson. Instead of investments, the consortium brought amended proposals without its own activities.

The buildings continue to deteriorate, cable and other thieves as well as graffiti greasers did and do their part. Due to non-compliance with all contractual commitments, the Liegenschaftsfonds applied in 2012 for a rescission of the purchase contract. In January 2015, the Berlin Regional Court ruled that the Russian investor must return the building to Berliner Liegenschaftsfonds. However, the land charges registered in the land register (more than five million euros) still have to be paid by the owner. Location and size of the property allow various higher-value utilizations.

The district of Pankow wants to have apartments built on the large site; the present proposals for a mixed-use residential/commercial should be carefully examined. The judgment did not provide complete legal certainty because the property owner MWT appealed. A final verdict was also not known in 2019. A use or repair of the listed buildings is still not in sight (as of August 2019).
